I am allowing this comment even though it comes from the Union of Concerned Scientists, which is in my studied opinion, a political group of scientists. Read the comments at the link. I have been married to a scientist for over 55 years and I am basing that opinion on the changes in the quest for grand money and the fact scientists must have grants and publish to survive in today’s academic world. It is a sorry, sorry thing to see science taken over by politics but that is what has happened. The chase for grant money is much akin to the politicians chase for political donors. How the mighty have fallen.
